Founded in 2006, Soomo Learning is a growing web-based academic publishing company currently residing above bustling Pack Square in downtown Asheville, NC. We publish web-native, interactive learning resources developed by our editorial team, and augment and web-enable content from other publishers too. As the work ahead of us grows, it's time to add some members to our small, close-knit development team!  We are all passionate about transformative learning and enjoy working at an organization which allows us to develop excellent learning resources and provide exceptional service. We strive to keep all of our processes lean, test-driven, and rapidly iterating based on real-world use.

Development Editor, Psychology

About Course Development

Developing a course is an iterative process, with each new term and new school giving us new insights into how to better teach the discipline. Leading this process requires a deep understanding of both the content itself and the challenges of teaching a general education course to non-majors. We give special attention to the needs of online and at-risk learners who benefit greatly from the inclusion of student success elements and frequent self-checks.

The Development Editor leads:

  1. Content Creation
    • analysis of discipline learning objectives and pedagogical challenges
    • evaluation of instructional strategies
    • project management on development of new content, features, and courses
    • curation of remarkable, well-aligned text, illustration, and video resources
    • acquisition or production of new works of writing, illustration, or video as needed
    • design of assignments emphasizing significance, relevance, and applicability of major ideas
    • composition of pedagogically effective questions, in a variety of formats, to help students attend to key points throughout a course
  2. Courseware Support
    • analysis of student performance and institutional needs
    • ongoing revision of our Psychology course as a whole, and as tailored at specific schools
    • demonstrations, training, and support for faculty in Psychology at many schools
    • development of training materials for students and faculty

Because we create and support web applications, we use numerous apps in our development process, and a certain amount of familiarity with modern web technology is assumed. Development Editors manage development of their courseware, but are supported by other Soomo teams including Student Support, Sales, Software Development, Design, and Permissions.

Beyond these efforts in Psychology course development and support, we are seeking someone to assist in our contributions to the literature of student success and the scholarship of teaching and learning Psychology through literature review, research design, presentation at conferences, and publication in journals.

Position Requirements

This is a full-time position in a small, collegial company. Because we’re still nimble and constantly innovating, our daily work varies and we’re learning more every semester about how to better support students. The one thing that doesn’t change is our commitment to radically improving the college course experience for tens of thousands of students each year.

Location: All Development Editors work in our downtown office located in a 100-year-old building right on Pack Square in Asheville, North Carolina
Minimum Education Required: A master’s degree in Psychology; PhD preferred
Minimum Experience: At least 3 years of teaching Intro Psychology in general education

The following skills and attributes are highly desired:

  • a sense of what makes writing or video accessible and engaging as well as academically rigorous
  • a willingness to take ownership of the courseware developed, balanced with a readiness to benefit from the experience we’ve gained over the last 10 years in how to build exceptional courseware
  • the ability to engage with basic statistics to analyze student usage patterns, and an inquisitive spirit for finding anomalies and chasing down explanations
  • a willingness to work with faculty at many institutions who are new to active learning courseware and analytics-driven intervention

Bonus points if you have:

  • experience teaching online, in community colleges, or in open-enrollment institutions
  • insight into where students struggle in intro Psychology courses, why they struggle, and ideas for how to help
  • a solid understanding of general Psychology and why it is included in the general education curriculum
  • studied cognitive or educational Psychology at the graduate level
  • published in the scholarship of teaching and learning Psychology
