Director of Learning Design


Full-Time Staff Position
Asheville, North Carolina

Are you a leader in learning design? Are you passionate about improving student outcomes and uncovering learning-design best practices? Does the opportunity to empower others to create remarkable, effective courses energize you?

Lead the design and development of learning products at Soomo Learning.

Role Overview:

The Director of Learning Design will oversee all learning products to ensure they meet the highest standards and continue to advance practices in learning design and client customer service. In this role you will be responsible for overseeing, teaching, and coaching a growing team of subject-matter-expert editors. This includes supporting the team in critically and creatively applying best practices as they develop, build, evaluate, and improve their courses. In addition, you will implement processes and coach team members to provide exemplary client customer service. The Director will successfully partner and guide client schools toward embracing well-founded design practices. There is also the opportunity to lead ongoing efforts to conduct, apply, and share original research. The Director of Learning Design is an integral position within the organization and is ultimately responsible for the management of effective people, processes, and practices.

Desired Experience and Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience required
  • Leadership and client management experience highly preferred
  • Track record of successful application of learning methodologies, instructional practices, and design thinking in developing online learning
  • Strong core skills in outcome creation, alignment, and formative assessment
  • Ability to effectively lead, teach, and coach others
  • Ability to successfully manage and optimize projects and processes
  • Willingness to continually test assumptions and apply research in innovative ways
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Master’s degree required in relevant field such as learning design, learning science, or cognitive psychology; PhD preferred.

Instructor Support Specialist


Full-Time Staff Position
Asheville, North Carolina

Soomo is looking for the right person to add to our Instructor Support team. Instructor Support Specialists function as advocates for instructors who teach college courses with our web-native, interactive textbooks.

About Courseware Support:

Supporting a course intended for students is an iterative process, with each new term and new school giving us insights into how to better tailor our tools and features for instructors and students. Leading this process requires an understanding not only of the student’s perspective, but also of the challenges of teaching a general education course to non-majors. We give special attention to the needs of online and at-risk learners who benefit greatly from the inclusion of student-success elements and frequent self-checks, and we strive to help instructors assist those students.

Courseware support includes:
  • Creating and maintaining courses for student use
  • providing custom reports on student activity
  • helping QA new features designed especially for our students and instructors
  • providing instructor support via email and phone
  • developing training materials for faculty

Position Requirements:

This is a full-time position in a small, collegial company. 

Minimum Education Required

A bachelor’s degree

Compensation and Benefits
  • compensation commensurate with experience ($40–$45K)

The following skills and attributes are highly desired:

  • a willingness to take ownership of the courseware support process balanced with a readiness to benefit from the experience we’ve gained over the last several years in how to build and support exceptional courseware
  • incredible written communication skills and the ability to make complex situations easy to understand using clear and simple writing
  • experience using Excel to engage with statistics, along with an inquisitive spirit for finding anomalies and chasing down explanations
  • natural curiosity, willingness to problem solve, and eagerness to work with faculty who may be new to active learning courseware and analytics-driven intervention

Because we create and support web applications, we use numerous online tools in our development process, and a certain amount of familiarity with modern web technology is assumed.

Bonus points if you:

  • have worked at high levels in customer support
  • are familiar with Process Street, Jira, Confluence, and/or Intercom
  • Have experience on a QA team
