Director of Learning Design

Full-Time Staff Position
Asheville, North Carolina

Lead the design and development of learning products at Soomo Learning.

Role Overview:

The Director of Learning Design will oversee all learning products to ensure they meet the highest standards and continue to advance practices in learning design and client customer service. In this role you will be responsible for overseeing, teaching, and coaching a growing team of subject-matter-expert editors. This includes supporting the team in critically and creatively applying best practices as they develop, build, evaluate, and improve their courses. In addition, you will implement processes and coach team members to provide exemplary client customer service. The Director will successfully partner and guide client schools toward embracing well-founded design practices. There is also the opportunity to lead ongoing efforts to conduct, apply, and share original research. The Director of Learning Design is an integral position within the organization and is ultimately responsible for the management of effective people, processes, and practices.

Desired Experience and Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience required
  • Leadership and client management experience highly preferred
  • Track record of successful application of learning methodologies, instructional practices, and design thinking in developing online learning
  • Strong core skills in outcome creation, alignment, and formative assessment
  • Ability to effectively lead, teach, and coach others

Development Editor

Full-Time Staff Position
Asheville, North Carolina

Position Responsibilities:

Developing a course webtext is an iterative process, with each new term and new school giving us insights into how to better teach course concepts. Leading this process requires a deep understanding of both the content itself and the challenges of teaching a general education course to non-majors. We give special attention to the needs of online and at-risk learners who benefit greatly from the inclusion of student-success elements and frequent self-checks. Specific responsibilities include:

Content Creation:
  • Analysis of discipline learning objectives and pedagogical challenges
  • Evaluation of instructional strategies
  • Project management on development of new content, features, and courses
  • Curation of remarkable, well-aligned text, illustrations, and video resources
  • Acquisition or production of new works of writing, illustrations, or videos as needed
  • Design of assignments emphasizing significance, relevance, and applicability of major ideas
  • Composition of pedagogically effective questions, in a variety of formats, to help students attend to key points throughout a course
  • Coordination with Soomo teams including Student Support, Sales, Software Development, Design, Production, and Permissions.
Courseware Support:
  • Analysis of student performance and institutional needs
  • Ongoing revision of assigned webtexts as a whole, and as tailored at specific schools
  • Demonstrations, training, and support for faculty
  • Development of training materials for students

Position Requirements:

This is a full-time position in a small, collegial company. Because we are still nimble and constantly innovating, our daily work varies and we are learning more every day about how to better support students. The one thing that doesn’t change is our commitment to radically improving the college course experience for tens of thousands of students each year. Because we create and support web applications, we use numerous apps in our development process, and a certain amount of familiarity with modern web technology is assumed.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s or PhD preferred.

Minimum Experience

3 years’ experience in instructional design or development editing in higher education.

Starting Salary

Commensurate with experience ($60–$80K)

The following skills and attributes are highly desired:

  • Desire to facilitate student learning in an online environment
  • A willingness to manage all aspects of the webtext development and improvement process informed by the experience we’ve gained over the last 10 years in how to build exceptional courseware
  • A sense of what makes writing or video accessible and engaging as well as academically rigorous
  • The ability to engage with statistics to analyze student usage patterns and an inquisitive spirit for finding anomalies and chasing down explanations
  • A willingness to work with faculty at many institutions who are new to active learning courseware and data-driven intervention
  • Strong copyediting skills with experience conforming to editorial and style standards
  • Demonstrated ability to produce error-free work in fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong technical skills using software such as Word, Pages, and Excel and some familiarity with HTML
  • A willingness to learn new technologies and incorporate new skills and knowledge into daily work
  • A willingness to ask questions

Bonus points if you have:

  • Insight into where students struggle in intro-level general education courses, why they struggle, and ideas for how to help
  • A solid understanding of math and science at the introductory level and why these courses are included in the general education curriculum

Director of Marketing

Full-Time Staff Position

The Role:

Soomo Learning is seeking a confident, creative professional to lead the strategic vision and tactical execution of a marketing plan for its learning products and services. The Director of Marketing will be responsible for developing an understanding of the higher-education market and opportunities for Soomo as well as creating and executing a clearly defined marketing and communications strategy that will enable the company to excel in that market. Serving as the marketing leader within the organization, the Director of Marketing will initially be responsible for all aspects of marketing but will be empowered to hire, train, and manage supporting marketing personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Market research: You will be responsible for identifying current and emerging trends, quantifying opportunities, and identifying the best customer profile with whom to promote Soomo Learning.
  • Marketing planning: With this market research, and an understanding of Soomo’s products, you will develop market strategies and create individual campaigns based on Soomo’s products and services.
  • Marketing implementation: You will implement and manage all marketing activities with an early emphasis on external communication: refining Soomo’s story, establishing its voice, and ensuring that all campaigns reflect Soomo’s mission as a company seeking to advance the art and science of effective instruction.
  • Sales enablement: You will work with the sales team to understand their needs and develop internal materials on product and service offerings.
